The Machinery Is Running. Who Paid for Saturday?
The plant has its machines back. You have an extra shift to pay and a lift that stayed another day. TNA connects millwright job costs with bookkeeping, payroll and tax planning, so the next quote accounts for what this one actually took.
• CPA-led accounting for millwrights • Bookkeeping and job-cost reporting • Payroll and owner pay support • Corporate CRA support within scope • Fixed fees agreed before work begins
For incorporated millwright businesses, including a self-employed industrial mechanic working through their own corporation. Tell us which contract, tax date or number needs attention. We'll help you work out which support fits.
It Was Only One More Shift
Until You Opened the Purchase Order
The conveyor was meant to be ready on Friday. A worn coupling meant another shift, and the lift stayed too. The plant manager asked you to get it running. You did. Then you opened the purchase order. It still covered three days.
- Did time checking blueprints, schematic drawings and machinery reach the estimate?
- Were overtime, rigging and site safety checks charged to this project?
- Have supplier credits for defective parts reached the books?
- Did the repair approval become an updated work order?
- Would you use the same rate for another shutdown?
Now the plant wants you back for another shutdown. We help compare the quote, timesheets, equipment bills and invoice, so you can see whether the gap came from the rate, the hours or work that never got billed.
Before You Quote the Next Millwright Job
What Did That Extra Shift Take Out of the Margin?
Say a machinery installation is priced at $30,000 with $24,000 in expected direct costs. One extra shutdown shift adds $1,600 in labour, and another day of equipment rental adds $800. If the purchase order and invoice do not change, the $6,000 expected gross profit falls to $3,600. That extra shutdown has taken 40% out of the expected gross profit before overhead and tax.
If you're the industrial mechanic who stayed, your own hours matter too. Even without another wage payment, Saturday changes what you earned for your time. Include those hours when checking the next estimate.
Let's Follow What Went Into It
Accounting Services for Your Millwright Business
First, Find Where Saturday Went
Bookkeeping and Job Costing
Let's put the extra shift against the right contract. We match labour, components, travel and equipment rental to your projects, then account for overhead and supplier credits. You can see whether machinery repair, welding or fabrication covered their costs.
Then Allow for the Tax
Corporate Tax, GST/HST and Tax Planning
That profit still has tax to account for. We prepare corporate returns, financial statements and GST/HST filings, review equipment deductions and instalments, and check applicable BC PST on the mechanical equipment you repair or install.
Those Hours Belong in the Pay Records Too
Payroll, Owner Pay and T-Slips
Two workers on a millwright shift can need different pay records. We help with employee wages, deductions, taxable benefits, CRA remittances, owner pay and T4/T5 slips. Where subcontractors invoice for construction work, we check T5018 reporting requirements.
And What Comes Home With You
Personal Tax and Finances for Millwright Owners
Owner pay also reaches your personal return. We review salary, dividends and shareholder records alongside what you need at home. Personal tax service comes through our Nosehill office or a trusted partner, with the work and fee confirmed first.
Before You Book the Next Crew
Cash Flow Forecasting and Financial Management
The next shutdown may need wages before this invoice is paid. We forecast cash around parts, equipment rental, payroll, tax and customer payments, then check whether you can afford another industrial mechanic or a larger maintenance contract.
Put the Reports to Work
What Would You Change Before the Next Shutdown?
A machinery installation can bring in more than routine maintenance work and still leave less. With agreed ongoing reviews, construction millwrights and industrial mechanics can compare the return before filling the next gap in the calendar.| What you need to work out | How TNA helps with the decision |
|---|---|
| Can we use the same labour allowance? | Compare the estimate with paid hours for setup, rigging, safety checks and testing, including the extra shift. |
| Which millwright contracts are leaving us more? | Compare machinery installations, shutdown repair and routine maintenance work after labour, travel and equipment costs. |
| Should we buy our own lifting equipment? | Check the purchase, financing and upkeep against expected use and the cash needed to complete current contracts. |
| Can another industrial mechanic join the crew? | Forecast wages, benefits and apprenticeship training costs against client payment dates, including a delay. |
You Don't Have to Sort It All First
Start With the Part That Followed You Home
1. Tell Us What You Want to Work Out
Maybe a repair ran over. Maybe construction companies are taking longer to pay, or your books are behind. Send a short message about what needs attention and any deadline coming up. We can start there.
2. We Work Out What Needs Checking
We'll ask who keeps your records and which software you use, then identify the estimates, work orders and timesheets needed. If you already have a bookkeeper, we discuss their process and where our team could help.
3. You Know the Work and Price Before We Start
We agree on the services, reporting schedule and fixed fee, including the tasks that stay with your team. You know what we need, what the support covers and who to contact. Then we can start the agreed accounting work.
What Would That Support Cost?
Let's Price the Help Your Millwright Business Needs
One industrial mechanic may need catch-up books and a corporate return. Construction millwrights with installation and maintenance crews may need payroll and job reports. We price the support around your records and reporting needs.

Questions About Accounting for Millwrights
Can you work with the software our millwright crew already uses?
Yes. TNA works with Xero and QuickBooks, among other tools. We check how timesheets, parts purchases and customer invoices reach your accounts. Whether your millwright crew handles machinery repair, welding or fabrication, we review the bookkeeping process before suggesting changes to your setup.
Which expenses can a millwright company deduct?
Eligible millwright expenses can include repair parts, equipment rentals, wages, insurance and business travel. Hand and power tools or heavy machinery may need capital cost allowance. Keep receipts showing who paid and how each item is used so we can check the deduction and any personal use.
Can my company claim millwright training costs?
Training courses on machinery safety, programmable logic controls or other new technologies may be deductible. We check how the trade skills relate to your millwright work, who pays and whether trade certification is involved. Keep course details and receipts so we can review any taxable employee benefit too.
Does hiring a millwright apprentice bring tax benefits?
Eligible employers may claim a non-refundable federal credit of 10% of qualifying wages, up to $2,000 per apprentice each year. Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) is a Red Seal trade. We check registered apprenticeship training and payroll records; only the first two apprenticeship years qualify.
Should a millwright charge BC PST on machinery repairs?
BC PST exemptions can apply to repair and maintenance of qualifying production machinery and equipment. A manufacturing customer does not automatically make the work exempt. We check equipment use, installation, parts, labour and exemption records before confirming what your millwright company should charge.
Does one regular client change my company's taxes?
One client alone does not make an incorporated industrial mechanic a personal services business. CRA looks at the working relationship and other conditions. We review control over the work, equipment ownership and the contract, because this can change corporate tax rates and allowable deductions.
Before You Price the Next Shutdown
Will the Next Millwright Job Pay for All the Work?
Keeping the equipment running took the extra shift. Your next quote should account for it. If you're still unsure whether the gap was in labour, equipment costs or billing, tell us what happened. We'll explain which accounting support fits and what it will cost.
